Description
This new annual pasture legume has the unique feature of tolerance to both severe salinity and to winter waterlogging. Messina can be safely used for grazing and has the added benefit of adding nitrogen to soils that are generally N-deficient, provided it is inoculated with the salt-tolerant Rhizobium strain for Messina. Messina tolerates grazing, appearing highly palatable to sheep with no known animal health issues being observed. Messina is suitable for producing high-quality hay and silage. In mildly saline areas, it can complement ryegrasses and act as a nitrogen source to increase their productivity. As saline environments are highly variable, Messina is likely to be recommended in mixes with balansa clover and Persian clover.
