Description
Black Mustard is an excellent addition in all cover crop mixes in helping manage soil-borne pathogens. It’s ability to suppress various soil-borne pests and diseases through it’s high levels of glucosinolates, helping to clean up your problem paddocks. Mustard makes a great in-between cover crop that will add much value to the soil. When sown in late spring, it will thrive and smother weeds at the same time. Studies show that live mustard plant tissues, seeds, and roots contain compounds that act as soil biofumigants, killing nematodes and pathogenic fungi. To reap this benefit, mustard must be treated like green manure – chopped down and quickly turned under. Once tilled under, the crop adds some nitrogen and lots of organic matter to the soil. Mustards must be plowed under a minimum of three weeks prior to planting a new crop. In order to release their alleopathic chemicals and biofumigants, mustards require rain or irrigation throughout the growing period. Thiram Treated.
