Description
Taipan was selected for its exceptionally quick germination and establishment, along with its ability to persist in tough growing conditions. It is a late-maturing, erect oat that provides rapid early growth and a quick time to first grazing, allowing it to be grazed early in the season under favourable conditions. Taipan is well suited to cattle, performs well for horses, and is also suitable for sheep, particularly in continuous grazing systems.
In rotational grazing systems, care should be taken not to graze below 10–15 cm, as heavy grazing below the growing point can result in poor regrowth. Frequent, well-managed grazing supports overall crop performance and helps limit leaf rust development.
Taipan has demonstrated strong drought tolerance, continuing to grow in adverse conditions and handling hot, dry weather better than many other varieties. It provides excellent early winter feed, reliable winter production, and strong spring feed, maintaining green, palatable feed well into late spring. The recommended WA sowing rate is 80–100 kg per hectare.
