Description
Fescue Tall (Festuca arundinacea Schreb) is a deep-rooted perennial grass. It is highly productive and is a suitable winter and spring feed source for all classes of livestock. The best time to establish is in autumn to early winter. Tall Fescue is extremely palatable and easily digested by livestock with a high production level. This Mediterranean-style fescue grows well in winter but will become summer dormant, suited to your higher rainfall areas.
Agronomic Information:
– Will grow in a wide range of soil types and can handle pH 4.5-8, also has good tolerance to Aluminium and saline soils.
– Seeding rates 6-8 kg/ha for dryland and 8-10 kg/ha irrigation stand alone, in a mix with Tall Wheat Grass and clovers 2-4 kg/ha.
– Fertiliser is important in establishment with the normal application of super/potash @200 kg/ha. Tall fescue is particularly responsive to Molybdenum in lower pH situations.
– When establishing Tall fescue do not graze heavily in the first 12 months for best results. Once established, stands have been known to last 20 years or more.
– Disease and pest management is the same as other pasture varieties.
